DUP demands details of UUP-SF agreement

11/08/2004 - 07:36:06

The Democratic Unionist Party has demanded that the Ulster Unionist Party reveal details of the agreement it reached with Sinn Féin about restoring devolution last year.

The secret deal fell apart last year when UUP leader David Trimble decided that decommissioning moves by the IRA were not transparent enough.

Details of the agreement have never been revealed and the DUP is now demanding to know if Mr Trimble had agreed that powers over the courts and the police would be devolved to Stormont.

Party spokesman Gregory Campbell said fresh negotiations due to take place in September would be hampered by the “debris” from the Trimble years.
