Republic fans in Ulster set up own club

29 August 2004

Plans are under way to establish the first ever Republic of Ireland supporters club in Ulster, it has emerged.

And, it is believed, the club - set to be based in west Belfast - will be officially endorsed by the FAI, in Dublin.

It is hoped the supporters' club will be up-an-running before the Republic's first World Cup qualifying game against Cyprus, next Saturday.

Hundreds of fans from Northern Ireland regularly travel to Lansdowne Road to watch Brian Kerr's side, and its hoped the club will generate more interest in the team.

Said one Republic fan: "The club would enable fans to buy tickets off the FAI for Ireland games, and we believe there is a great interest in the team at the minute.

"The idea is that tickets would be available to registered supporters, and the supporters' club will have a lot of benefit to local fans.

"There is great support for Brian Kerr's team up here, and this is something which the FAI recognises."
