Taoiseach calls on kidnappers to release Irish-born aid worker

20/10/2004 - 07:39:40

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has called on the kidnappers of an Irish-born aid worker to release her unconditionally.

Margaret Hassan, the local head of the charity Care International, was abducted while being driven to work in Baghdad yesterday morning.

Videotape of her in captivity was later broadcast by al-Jazeera television, but it remains unclear who was behind the kidnapping.

Mrs Hassan was born in Dublin, but married an Iraqi man and has been living and working in Iraq for 30 years.

Mr Ahern confirmed yesterday that officials had made contact with her Iraqi husband and her family in Ireland to keep them up to date on the situation.
