The Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association are not surprised by the latest revelations in the Sunday Tribune that the RUC member heading the investigation into the discovery of a bomb on the Omeath Road outside Newry last year stands accused of trying to conceal evidence linking a crown agent to the devices.

This confirms what we have stated from the outset, namely that the accused men Martin Brogan and Mark Carroll were the victims of a set-up by agent provocateur Kevin Byrne. These men were released when their defence team proved that forensic evidence being used against them had been deliberately planted by the British Army.

However another innocent man remains behind bars on the same trumped up charges. Seamus Doherty from Derry has been held in connection with this bomb find, the allegation being that traces of his DNA were found on the device. Seamus has protested his innocence since his arrest and his defence team has applied for an “abuse of process” order but this application was postponed last Friday after the prosecution indicated they would be applying for a public interest immunity certificate in an effort to protect their agent.

We in the IRPWA call for the unconditional release of Seamus Doherty who is just one of the many men in Maghaberry Gaol being held in a form of selective internment. The case of Brendan O’Connor, a young man from Tyrone who having been found innocent of charges against him continues to be held on suspect evidence, is further proof that these men are being held as political hostages. We stand solidly behind these men and will not be deflected from their cause until they are free.
