Teachers and parents urged to promote reading

Education Minister Mary Hanafin has called on teachers and parents to promote a culture of reading among children in an effort to improve Irish literacy standards.
Ms Hanafin made the call while visiting one of the first schools to receive free books under a recently launched €500,000 literacy initiative.
She said more than 86,000 primary school pupils in 600 schools would benefit from the scheme.
