Gaelscoil in Derry

A new Irish-language school has opened in Co Derry. Gaelscoil na Spéiríní is based at the An Ráth Dubh Centre in Moneyneena and was officially opened on Saturday by the former Armagh Gaelic footballer Jarlath Burns, an Irish speaker.
Gaelscoil na Spéiríní is the Irish-medium preschool and primary school for children in the Ballinascreen area.
Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness, a former minister of education in the North, also attended the opening.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern sent his congratulations to everyone involved with the school. He applauded the efforts of the committee in working towards the opening.
In Co Armagh, an Irish-language school has received a major funding boost.
The Irish-language charity Taca has donated £2,200 to help with the running of Naíscoil Chois Locha in Lurgan.
“This was money which was collected in Taca collection boxes in shops and pubs throughout Lurgan for the past year and we would like to thank the people of Lurgan for their generosity and support,” said Pat Keenan, the charity’s manager.
Bernadette O’Hagan, the chairwoman of Naíscoil Chois Locha, said the school would be able to put the much-needed donation to good use in replacing equipment and carrying out work in the school’s garden.
