Display on Collins is museum's star exhibit
AN exhibit on the life of Michael Collins is the centrepiece of a new €500,000 museum developed at Collins Barracks as part of Cork's reign as EU Capital of Culture in 2005, writes Ralph Riegel.
The museum, which opens to the public on March 2 (thereafter every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10am-1pm) has four major exhibits including the Michael Collins room, the Military History of Collins Barracks room, the UN room and the Observation corridor.
Defence Minister Willie O'Dea will formally open the museum tomorrow. The exhibition will feature the IRA military director's greatcoat and the desk he used Mespil Road in Dublin from 1919-1921.
Marks left on the desk during a raid by auxiliaries in 1921 are still visible. A large number of personal possessions donated by Collins's nephew will also feature.
