IRA arrests expected over bank heist

23/01/2005 - 13:41:06

It has been reported that police in the North are set to arrest a number of IRA members in connection with the Belfast bank robbery.

The Sunday Times is reporting that arrests are imminent following an intensive investigation after the £26m (€37.4m) heist.

Gardaí are expected to co-operate with the PSNI to carry out a series of raids in the border counties.

This follows a massive intelligence gathering operation, which included taped telephone conversations that indicate IRA involvement.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is to meet Sinn Féin this week to discuss the political fallout from the robbery.
