Five guilty of illegal membership

21 February 2005 14:34

Five men who gardaí say were members of an IRA active service unit have been found guilty of membership of an illegal organisation at the Special Criminal Court.

They will be sentenced this afternoon.

The five were arrested with balaclavas, pickaxe handles, a sledgehammer, a stun gun and garda uniforms among other items in Bray, Co Wicklow, in October 2002.

Election and campaign posters for Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh were also found.

In his ruling, Judge Diarmuid O'Donovan said there was no doubt that they were up to no good, and by that he meant criminal activity.
